RONCAL AND SALAZAR VALLEYS

Located in the north, at the foot of the Navarre Pyrenees and nearly one hour from Gallipienzo, we find some of the greenest and known nooks of Navarre, the valleys of Roncal and Salazar. Known for their exceptional landscapes and gastronomy and with their own Denomination of Origin, become trapped by all the charming nooks that exist in these valleys.

We are offered the chance to travel through nature as well as through rural culture and taste all the cheeses that are made in these valleys. The Belagua valley, the most pronounced Pyrenean ecosystem in the entire Roncal valley, can be recognised for its high peaks, among which we have La Mesa de los Tres Reyes (2,428 metres), the highest in all of Navarre. This spectacular valley is headed by an indescribable as well as karstic landscape; the Karst of Larra, which is one of the most impressive areas in Europe and known for captivating lovers of hiking and the mountain.

Following the Roncal valley we find the Salazar valley. In this valley, the town of Ochagavía/Otsagabia is a post card destination that is always in style. Walk on its stone streets, visit its stone church or walk across its medieval bridge and over the Salazar River. We embark on this adventure and continue down the road until reaching the largest beech and fir forest in Europe and known as the Jungle of Irati.

This is only the beginning of a holiday of relaxation and peacefulness in the heart of the Pyrenees. Discover magical places a step away from Gallipienzo. Plan your holiday today at www.heredadberaguhotel.com.

Gallipienzo, medieval town – History of a kingdom.

The history of the old Kingdom of Navarre is not only told about the entire territory, but also of each and every one of its population centres, which have been important throughout the ages. This is the case of Gallipienzo, which we have notions about since Roman times in the Iberian Peninsula, through the different archaeological sites and remains that have been found in the area.

The most important archaeological sites that have been found are Santa Criz de Eslava (which can be visited) and other remains found in the nearest district to Gallipienzo, known as “los Casquilletes de San Juan”, which can be seen in the Museum of Pamplona.

However, the time when Gallipienzo reached its maximum splendour is undoubtedly the Middle Ages, when the fortress we know today as Gallipienzo was built to serve as a resistance centre against the Moors around the year 924, later becoming a bordering villa between the kingdoms of Navarre and Aragon.

Gallipienzo remains true to its past with its intricate and beautiful narrow stone streets and some architectural monuments from that period. Some of these are listed below:

Parroquia de San Pedro (Parish Church of San Pedro): dating back to the 14th century, its front façade has been preserved and its main altarpiece is noteworthy, of which only the sculpture remains, a carving of the “Virgen del Rosario” (Our Lady of the rosary) and another one of a Gothic style “Virgen en pie” (Virgin standing). The interior decorations on the benches and corridors reflect themes related with Saint Peter and scenes from the Passion of Christ.

Another great treasure of this villa is the Church of San Salvador (13th-14th centuries), which was declared an Asset of Cultural interest in 1994 due to its artistic value. Also, Gallipienzo conserves one of the seven crypts that exist in the Iberian Peninsula. We are referring to the Crypt of Santa Margarita, a jewel of late Roman 12th century architecture, although with a certain air of renaissance.

From the high area of the town we can see the Roman Bridge, which has been rebuilt on several occasions since the Middle Ages, giving it the appearance it has today. During that period, the bridge had a defensive tower to control access.

If the traveller is looking for a place without light pollution where to enjoy astro-tourism, the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Peña (13th century) is the perfect place to observe the stars.

Walking the streets of the town of dreams we find other places of historic and cultural interest of what once was life at Gallipienzo. At this point, the passageways are worth mentioning, which are spaces that separated the houses of the town, normally signalling that it was a noble house. An example of this is the passageway on Juego Largo street.

An important area for the people of that period to socialise was la Plaza del Matadero, a place where animals were slaughtered and left hanging to dry before taking them to the meat market to feed the families of the town.

We can see these as well as many other charms from the medieval period of Gallipienzo. We invite you to take a walk on the stone narrow streets and discover nooks that seem to have been taken out from the history of another time.

come visit Gallipienzo and enjoy the complete vital experience at www.heredadberaguhotel.com.

Natural reserve of Kaparreta – Natural surroundings of Gallipienzo

Gallipienzo is a very fortunate town for having such natural surroundings with an acknowledged natural value and a characteristic beauty that can be seen with the naked eye from the heights of the town.

We are referring to Kaparreta, declared a natural Reserve in 1987, with vegetation such as holly, kermes, buxus, juniperus (used to make home-made pacharán, a sloe-flavoured liqueur) and savin junipers. The inhabitants of Gallipienzo and the neighbouring towns enjoy this landscape through hiking trails, Nordic walking, and guided tours to see different types of birds or photography, with impressive panoramic views.

The birds that dwell in Kaparreta and for which a lookout was established at Gallipienzo to practice bird watching, are the Egyptian vulture, griffon vulture, peregrine falcon, eagle owl and the golden eagle, and the most important of them all, Bonelli’s eagle. For these reasons and due to its natural and ecological value, in 2014 Gallipienzo was chosen as the ideal place to recover the population of Bonelli’s Eagle in Navarre, through the LIFE Bonelli European initiative.

Also, since 1996, the Natural Reserve of Kaparreta has been considered a Special Protected area for birds (ZEPA is the Spanish acronym) and is part of the Natura 2000 network; also, an effort is being made to conserve its 9 natural habitats of wild flora and fauna.

Another one of the reasons for the beauty of this Natural Reserve is that it is crossed by the Aragon River, which nourishes this area with its water and together with the mountains, comprises what is known as Aragon River’s Green Canyon.

Places with great beauty and natural value surrounding Gallipienzo, also known as “the town of dreams”.

Urban walking tours of Gallipienzo

Old Gallipienzo offers tourists different walking tours to enjoy its intricate narrow streets, paying special importance on the natural landscape and highlighting aspects of the history of this watchtower town, which makes us value how important the Kingdom of Navarre used to be.

The first urban walking tour is focussed on the natural wealth; starting at the Fountain and heading towards the interpretive trail of the natural reserve. From there we will walk to the bird observatory, to subsequently climb up to the hermitage of “Nuestra Señora de la Peña”. We will return to the town via the “Camino de las Estelas” and to complete the tour, we will visit the incredible Church of San Salvador. – https://bit.ly/3aOdRne

The urban route dedicated to the town’s history begins at the fountain and heads towards the exhibition area. We will then walk along “Juego Largo” street until arriving at a Passageway. Upon arrival we are welcomed by the strong walls of the Parish Church of San Pedro, we will then reach “Plaza del Matadero”, and then return to the Chruch of San Salvador. – https://bit.ly/34immFW

Both paths take about 50 minutes to complete and we recommend wearing comfortable shoes. A place to get lost between stone walls and great beauty.
