Natural reserve of Kaparreta – Natural surroundings of Gallipienzo

Gallipienzo is a very fortunate town for having such natural surroundings with an acknowledged natural value and a characteristic beauty that can be seen with the naked eye from the heights of the town.

We are referring to Kaparreta, declared a natural Reserve in 1987, with vegetation such as holly, kermes, buxus, juniperus (used to make home-made pacharán, a sloe-flavoured liqueur) and savin junipers. The inhabitants of Gallipienzo and the neighbouring towns enjoy this landscape through hiking trails, Nordic walking, and guided tours to see different types of birds or photography, with impressive panoramic views.

The birds that dwell in Kaparreta and for which a lookout was established at Gallipienzo to practice bird watching, are the Egyptian vulture, griffon vulture, peregrine falcon, eagle owl and the golden eagle, and the most important of them all, Bonelli’s eagle. For these reasons and due to its natural and ecological value, in 2014 Gallipienzo was chosen as the ideal place to recover the population of Bonelli’s Eagle in Navarre, through the LIFE Bonelli European initiative.

Also, since 1996, the Natural Reserve of Kaparreta has been considered a Special Protected area for birds (ZEPA is the Spanish acronym) and is part of the Natura 2000 network; also, an effort is being made to conserve its 9 natural habitats of wild flora and fauna.

Another one of the reasons for the beauty of this Natural Reserve is that it is crossed by the Aragon River, which nourishes this area with its water and together with the mountains, comprises what is known as Aragon River’s Green Canyon.
